In any UAV platform, redundancy and diversity of frequencies used in communications can provide a more secured and unlimited range. Using both Wi-Fi and a mobile network is a typical use case. Multipath TCP is the candidate to be used for increased redundancy. This will provide a transparent communication to the UAV from Wifi (80~100 meters) to 3G/ 4G (mobile covered areas) with both: phone to phone long range telemetry, and UAV control. A diversity of pilots is also desirable, especially in learning environments where a second smartphone-controller can easily avoid the firsts crashes due to absence of pilot experience. Allowing the teacher to gain control if any incident happens.
To be Coded:
Rewrite the communications of the app for include MultipathTCP. Using a phone to drive the drone, and another one on the drone to connect the drone to the network. Include the possibility of simultaneous smartphone-controllers connected to the same network of the drone to control. In order to make this process of network configuration more easy, could be done with Wifi Direct or NFC. Communication should work with really low baudrate using wireless serial links.

If the smartphone loosed detect that is not moving for a long period start the procedure if has mobile data network send an email with the last GPS Location. If not, send a SMS with the location. The lost smartphone should switch on the light and emit an audio message every minute for facilitate the location.

Autonomous drones normally use a flight plan that need to keep, following movements with more complexity than follow a line is required for release all the potential of unmanned aerial applications. Previous experiences of this concept are developed with PixHawk like blockly in ROS but none with Multiwii. Don’t exist any easy way to program behaviours in this platform. The idea is to use drone programming using functional blocks like in Scratch, each block abstracts a behaviour that can be followed to the multi-rotor directly from a web browser.

Time is crucial for fast responders like the successful deploy of HOT (Humanitarian Open Streetmap) in different catastrofes of last years. Every 3-5 seconds Mapp will record the orientation and position of the smartphone and take a picture. This data will be used to produce a directory with a collection of rectified pictures with the GPS location on the EXIF data. The generated images should be: GeoTIFF. PNG with transparent borders. JPG with white borders. Option to push generated orthomosaics to openaerialmap.org / mapknitter.org for community mapping and collaboration of simultaneous UAVS.

Easy and low cost 3D Tracking is an unresolved problem in robotics field. This task is crucial for automatice indoor drone behauviours. This job is demonstrated to work in numerous papers and can be implemented with optical tracking from a pair of cameras. The idea is to implement an OpenCV Camera app that can track the brightest point of the image, that should be a light active or passive. And send X,Y coordinates via UDP to a another PC/smartphone that will integrate all coordinates received to get the x, y ,z 3D point. Getting the 3D coordinates will be very fast since image processing is done in parallel in the distributed network of connected smartphones.
